Healthy Aging Substudy
The Healthy Aging study is an ongoing longitudinal study focused on the health and well-being of the parents of the CFP youth. The overarching goal of the research is to identify midlife factors that contribute to health disparities in cognitive decline and risk of dementia. Specifically, we are examining the influence of socioeconomic (e.g., education, financial hardship), personality (e.g., neuroticism, conscientiousness), social (e.g., discrimination, social support), and acculturation (e.g., cultural values, acculturative stress) on cognitive functioning in midlife Hispanic/Latino adults, and as well as the behavioral (e.g., physical inactivity, smoking), psychosocial (e.g., depressive symptoms, delay discounting), and physiological (e.g., inflammation, cellular biomarkers) mechanisms that explain these associations. This research will lead to new knowledge about midlife predictors of cognitive aging, identify social determinants and pathways that create and sustain health disparities for Hispanic/Latino populations, and point to new prevention and intervention targets for promoting healthy cognitive aging in midlife and beyond.
The Healthy Aging study was launched in 2018, with the longterm goal of following the CFP parents across midlife and into old age. At Wave 11 (mean age = 49 years), we assessed the cognitive status (e.g., memory, verbal fluency) of about 900 CFP parents. At Wave 12 (mean age - 51 years), we conducted more extensive assessments of cognition (e.g., memory, executive function, language, visuospatial tasks) and health (activity/sleep monitors, medications, risky health behaviors, COVID exposure). At Wave 13 (mean age = 53), we conducted additional assessments of cognitive function and health, including blood pressure and blood biomarkers (cholesterol, C-reactive protein, hemoglobin A1c, COVID antibody test).
The Healthy Aging study is funded by the National Institute on Aging. The PIs on this project are Drs. Angelina Sutin (Florida State University) and Richard W. Robins (UC Davis).
